The Broxap Round (Glen Shiel & Glen Affric)                                      UK Ultras

Jon Broxap completed this round in June1988 to establish a new record by climbing 28 Munros in a day (or 23-20 to be exact).  This improved on Martin Stone's 26 Munro record of the previous year which was based on an extension of the 24 peaks included in the Charlie Ramsey Round. In contrast Jon opted for a route in the Shiel-Affric region by extending an obvious circuit of the Munros of the South Cluanie Ridge and Five Sisters Ridge up into the Glen Affric area creating a formidable run of 78 miles with 33000' of climbing.  Attempts to improve the record further have so far been thwarted by bad weather. In 1997 Adrian Belton tried a 29 Munro round with another extension to Ramsey's Round, while in 2008 Steve Pyke attempted extending the Broxap Round by including Tom a' Choinich and Toll Creagach on the east ridge of Carn Eige. In the meantime the 1997 edition of Munro Tables promoted Sgurr na Carnach to Munro status and along with it Jon's record from 28 to 29 Munros in a day while Sgurr an Iubhair in the Mamores was demoted to a top so reducing the Ramsey Round and any extensions by one Munro! A short history of the 24 hour Munro record can be found elsewhere on this site - see below.

The 1988 Fell Runner article entitled ' Bein Fhionnlaidh's Case' gives Jon's account of his record breaking run plus a report by his pacers - see below.
